Our Republican Heritage

Republicanism is not a recent phenomenon in our history.

Many of characters and legends in our rich history are imbued with the traditions of republicanism. From the earliest days of our history, Australians from all walks of life have believed that among their fellow citizens, there was at least one Australian worthy to be the head of state.

Today’s belief that Australians can do anything - even be at the apex of their own system of government, comes to life in the Australian Republican Movement.

We are working to change the constitution to allow one of our own citizens, one who lives among us and appreciates fully what it is to be an Australian, to hold the highest office in the land. Join us and be part of history.

Reflect on the past and hope for the future. It's time to take the next step.

We need you to be part of this change by joining the Australian Republican Movement.

Now is the time when we will set a new course for the nation. It’s a time to celebrate what we have achieved in our first hundred years and set a timetable for what we still need to do. And this includes making sure that every Australian child has an opportunity to grow up and aspire to be the head of state of her or his own country.

Today, no Australian can ever be head of state - no matter how great their commitment, no matter how great their achievements.

With a century of Federation behind us, now is an ideal time for Australia to commit itself to reflect the independent nature of our nation in our constitution and no longer only allow a foreigner to hold the highest office in our land.

Be a part of nation building by supporting the Australian Republican Movement.

The process that finally led to Australia becoming a Federation lasted more than a decade and included considerable negotiation between the colonies and their citizens.

The path to an Australian republic is, like Federation, one that Australians need to embrace and understand fully.

The 1999 republic referendum was a step in the process to establish an Australian republic.

To take the next step, we need you to join. Please lend your support and be part of the movement of Australians who will make sure that the next referendum will result in our nation having an Australian, one chosen by us, as our head of state.
